neverendingrings

Finally took Joe to see his long over due birthday present, Lord of the Rings. What can I say, it's another presentation of the Lord of the Rings. It was however for me the first one of these disney-esque productions, with a rotating stage that had multiple platforms that raised and lowered, lots of people swinging from the ceiling and creatures running through the audience. Not exactly my cup of tea, but Joe had a great time. Give me an actor, a chair and an engaging tale that's enough staging for me.

Mom and Dad (Lenore and Joe) arrived just after Christmas for a week long run of touring and fun. Dad and I rode the London Eye; he and Joe visited the Cabinet War Rooms; and Mom, Dad and Joe went to the Tate Modern for an afternoon...that was the boring stuff.

The day after they landed we went out for the quintessential British High Tea experience at the Dorchester, but kept things low key as we geared up for the highlight of the trip...a day trip to Brussels for lunch. We took the Eurostar for the under 2 hour ride from London to Brussels where our friends Loreen and Bruce met us and had us back to their flat for coffee. Then it was off to lunch at a great restaurant, the Belga Queen. As the guidebooks says, the bathrooms are part of the fun, but we won't reveal the secret, other than it made for entertaining conversation at the table. From there they walked us to the Grand Place and provided a suggested tour route through the Christmas markets. When we were done, we ended up back at their place for a glass of wine and some snacks before heading back to London.

At the end of the trip, we made a quick stop at King's Cross Station for a photo opp at Platform 9 3/4 in honor of Harry Potter.

Later in the week we did a day bus trip to Stonehenge and Bath. Joe and I really looking forward to going back to Bath for a weekend. The tour of the Roman Baths from the first century AD that's worth making time for. To see these plumbing systems that are still working 2000 years later is a tribute to the Roman engineers.

For New Year's we spent the evening at home, except to head over to the Vauxhall bridge and watch the fireworks. As we headed out of the flat at about 11:15p we were struck by the feeling that the entire neighborhood was heading out of doors and over to the bridge. By midnight the bridge was packed with people and traffic was at a standstill. The fireworks were great and included fireworks that shot right off the London Eye, every fun.
